When I watched Bush’s visit, I thought to myself, look at all that posturing–all those high-level officials telling the president all that they are doing and trying to do. They are not going to communicate the whole truth to him–they want to look good and save their own jobs. When you’re in a position of authority, it’s as if you’re in a chamber where everyone is telling you what they think you want to hear, rather than what is actually happening. It’s W’s job to sort through all that and get to the truth. I don’t think he has done a good job of it. Neither do other people.

fake sympathy and fake relief efforts noted by a press release by U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.
It doesn’t make sense to me that she would say what she did in the press release, but also put up such a front in an interview with Anderson Cooper as noted in this Slate article: Newscasters, sick of official lies and stonewalling, finally start snarling
NY Times Op-Ed by David Brooks: People are mad as hell, unwilling to take it anymore.
When politicians answer pointed, and obviously emotionally-charged questions about delay and lack of progress with relief efforts with responses such as we need to focus on rescuing victims and providing relief rather than judging the situation now, it makes me think that they hope people will calm down with time and forget with time how badly this situation has been handled. I hope people will remember.
Many, many articles are being tagged in del.icio.us on Katrina.
Another entry by Bitch PhD has been added to the del.icio.us tag for whoprofits: Zero Tolerance for Price Gougers.
Update: From “A Feeling For Aristotle” by Ellen Quandahl, “dominant regimes work partly by determining the acceptable emotions” (16). (just a quote from something I’m reading for class.)
