Collin Gifford Brooke

He has links to 12 class blogs on his homepage (url above). All except WRT 109 (Fall 2003) Academic Writing (Honors) appear to be only class policies, syllabus, and text information.

Weblog expectations:

“…I would expect that you post brief entries about 2-3 items per week…”

Quality expectations:

Post enough to be useful later in writing final essay.

11 Student Blogs linked from course homepage.

All appear to be updated irregularly.

I’ve sent him an email to ask the following questions:

1. How many classes have you taught in which students were required to blog?

2. How did it go?

3. Do you and the students blog in class?

4. Do you think a case could be made for blogging improving student writing and/or critical thinking skills?

deep thinking about weblogs:

Note: I’d already found this article. I wonder if it’s used a lot in classes. Will search alltheweb to find out.

[Note: 152 results for "link:http://grumet.net/writing/web/deep-thinking-about-weblogs.html" on 12/02/2003.]

[Note: in completing the above search, found link to Andrew Grumet's Weblog: http://www.grumet.net/weblog/. According to his blog, AG is currently a technical architect for iLearn]

Needed to refer back to ELL’s blog post because I couldn’t remember how to do this.

Just finished updating links on left.

Terra Williams at fsu.edu has a blog called writingfly. She has parts of her dissertation online. Interesting info. Need to go back and read more when more awake!

Atlantic Book Reviews – Do some pleasure reading here soon.

Mailed additional requests for letters of recommendation (and b-day card to Grandma E) this morning. Talked to Steven on cell. Need to email him about arrival at ORD. He’s interested in dinner the night that I get in. What a great brother!!

Went to Borders and spent 2.5 hours reading/researching. Narrowing focus to blogs as a means to writing practice and process. What are gains? Skills developed? Concerns?

Added a few miscellaneous links to left navigation. I’ll add more and categorize later. This was just a test to see if I could change them.

It is freezing tonight. After work, I shivered my way over to the library and checked out a few books.

Researching Blogging

23 Nov 2003 In: blogging, teaching

I’m researching a paper I’m writing to include with my grad school applications and I keep getting diverted by all of the great links in mamamusings. Including links is an important part of blogging, but I just feel so behind. I need to get up to speed — FAST — on the discussion.

Link to check when more time:

Travel — http://www.dervala.net – ELL at MM says go now to read, but I can’t!

Research

ELL mentions possibly using a conference blog in her web class. Wonder if she did and how it worked. Will read more to see if she did and how it worked.

Still reading mamamusings and followed link to elearnspace’s The Art of Blogging – Part 1. Printed Part 1 to read later. Was reminded by a link in Part 2 of the article that I need to spend some time at Kairosnews.

Kairosnews- It’s the place for rhetoric, technology and pedagogy.

Got sidetracked again. RFLMAO at the discussion at kuro5hin on Responding to Spammers. Wicked senses of humor. I HAVE to go back for more another day.

Dive Into Mark – ELL is right. Good writing found here.

My blog origins

23 Nov 2003 In: blogging, writing

I’m now a member of Blogger. I figured since I am writing an essay on blogs and writing that I should take the plunge. My working title is: Blogs and Writing: issues of voice and community.

One of the first things I need to do is find a blogging dictionary to terms. Need to define:

permalink

trackback

wikis

Blogs I’ve visited:

Mamamusings – Asst. Prof at Rochester Institute of Technology. Good links and information on her site.

Invisible Adjunct – adjunct posting on academia

A List Apart – good reading – good article on blog writing here

Lillian – personal friend who I discovered hasn’t updated her blog in a while (hint).
