Elizabeth Lane aLawley has posted a link to her new courseware templates. How helpful is that?!?

The generousity of people to share their knowledge and resources on the Internet never ceases to amaze me.

Snack Food & Soda Ban

7 Jan 2004 In: meta

I really have a problem with marketing and selling unhealthy snack food and soda in schools. IMHO, if we teach nutrition and advocate healthy eating, then it’s contradictory to offer junk food and soda for sale at the same time. What kid would choose broccoli over a brownie?

There is encouraging news from Dr. Weil’s weekly newsletter: “New York City and the state of California have banned snack foods and sodas in school vending machines.”

Way to go NY and CA!!!

Day Planner: Clear Clutter Before Christmas

1 Jan 2004 In: meta

In Weez Blog:Counting Blessings post, she says, “We have a glut of possessions.” As I begin a 4-day weekend with the number one goal of cleaning and clearing out my apartment in honor of the new year, I have to agree.

Her post gave me the idea to do the clearing out before Christmas next year so that others, who have less, might be able to enjoy some of the items during the holidays that I no longer need or use.

However, let’s take it one step further, Weez continues, “So Aidan suggested that next time I get some money, I buy coats to give away. It’s not a bad idea. He gets it.”

Great idea Aidan!

I need to create a memory trigger so that I hesitate before I spend money on more stuff. I could transfer some of the saved funds into coats or goats.

On a similar note, while I enjoy meeting friends for meals and good discussions, I would much rather have them over to my home for a simple meal and great conversation. That way I avoid the big portions and prices and still get to enjoy their company.

Happy New Year

1 Jan 2004 In: meta

Reading ELL’s count your blessings post, I followed a track back to The Obvious? and wound up at A Mindful Life.

One of my intentions in the New Year is to become mindful. Thanks for the reminder! (g)

Let me count my blessings:

+ I have a family who loves me and, likewise, a family to love.

+ I have wonderful friends who offer so much of themselves to me, including: encouragement, excitement, support, love, peace, and constructive criticism.

+ I have found a church that feels like home.

I Love Burt’s Bees Lip Balm

31 Dec 2003 In: meta

An article from Fast Company announces, Burt’s Bees founder might run for governor of Maine: Roxanne Quimby for Governor!

It appears Quimby has sold controlling interest of Burt’s Bees to AEA Investors to finance a possible campaign. I hope AEA doesn’t plan to mess with the high product standards or formulas. I love Burt’s Bees Lip Balm.

U.S. Mad Cow

29 Dec 2003 In: meta

For the past six months or so I’ve been trying to eat less meat.

Last year I read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. It was enough to make this girl cry when I read about the treatment of workers at meat processing plants and the peddling of fast food in our nation’s schools. Now more bad news in this CNN story: Meat from U.S. mad cow traced to 8 states, Guam.

This morning I tried a veggie burger for the first time in a long while. I had expected something bland that tasted like cardboard. It’s excellent flavor surprised me. Have you tried a veggie burger lately? Yum. Really. Try one for yourself if you don’t believe me.
