Well, the job situation is solved for the time being. I interviewed today for a web project manager position for a large national company in the Chicago area and she hired me on the spot! It’s a 3 month contract position with more possible. The job really sounds like it will be a good match for my skills and experience. I start tomorrow afternoon!
The downside is, it will be a LONG commute until I find a place to live that is closer in. I’ve been checking out the roommate wanted ads in the Northwest Suburbs on Craigslist. Some ads sound like ok situations and others sound sketchy. It worries me a little trying something like that, but it might be doable. Any readers out there who have done it? Things to watch out for?

Sorry I can’t offer advice on the Craigslist thing. But congratulations on the job! Hired on the spot!

How far are you, by the way? Can you take a train in? (I have a family member who commutes from the Woodstock area, which is 2 hours, and he takes a train that leaves from somewhere relatively close to Woodstock. But for some reason I can never remember exactly where your parents are.

I have never done the craigslist thing, but I have had friends who do and it’s been relatively successful. I’d suggest avoiding people who don’t reply quickly (tend to be flakey) and making sure to ask about things that might bother you (e.g., drugs, pets, dishes). Also, ask how long they’ve been there and how much longer they plan on being there (gives you an idea if they are too nomadic to be stable roommates) and what their relationships with their former roommates were like (did their past roommate leave because they couldn’t agree on cleanliness? or was it because they took a job elsewhere?). I’m pretty trusting of people, though still hesitant and reluctant about living with strangers, but I say go for it!

Great work on the job! Wish I could help with the place. I’d look at train options, too; even if you have to drive to a Metra station then ride, that’s better than driving all the way.

Hey, those are the suburbs I live in (well, sort of–I’m at the far reaches). Email me specifically the town/area you would consider, and I’ll see if I know anything useful.
Oh, and congratulations on the job!

Thanks all and for your suggestions! My parents live in Dixon, which in non-rush hour traffic is a two hour commute by car to this location. The first hour is not much traffic at all and not bad driving at all. It’s the 2nd hour that is usually more congested with traffic and construction.
Another upside is that my half-brother S. works just a few streets over so we might be able to do lunch sometime!
