Ok, so I keep fiddling with the readings on units 2-4 for my English 1000 class. I’ve changed out readings and moved them around and I’m still not sure. Specifically, in Unit 2, I would rather have something on questionable public cell phone use than the iPod article; however, the iPod article does address public use that students would have to think about/transfer when they consider public cell phone or other technology use. Suggestions?

I wonder if readings are the best answer for the cell phone question. I’ve seen some essays about that, but don’t have references for you off the top of my head. What comes to mind is visuals – like the commercials with people yelling into cell phones and a kindly other commuter offering them a phone with decent reception. I don’t know if you could get a copy of the commercial without taping it yourself, but it seems in many ways more effective that text for making the point.
The iPod idea works, I think, but you might think about blending it in with the use of other portable music devices and the assumption of “private” sound space because of headphones. I wonder sometimes if people wearing headphones or earjacks have any idea how far beyond their ears their music is traveling, particularly in places like a library, or a bus full of commuters. What about comparing the assumptions inherent in the use of the iPod vs. a boom-box (aka ghetto blaster?) It seems there is a question of class or race division that merits an analytical look.
