digital content strategy, social media marketing, and seo expertise
Today in the writing lab, the student I tutored flipped on her PowerBook and played a clip from a TV show for me, portions of which she will use as evidence for the claims in her first-year writing paper. This use of digital technology and new media during a tutoring session was a first for me. In the past, I’ve talked about films and TV shows with students, but never before did we look at examples of what students were discussing in their papers during a tutoring session.
Times are changing…(finally!)
This event alerted me to an issue about resources for writing labs. They may need to stock a few headphones and headphone splitters so tutors and tutees can turn up the volume on videos or podcasts, but not disturb other tutors and students who are working nearby.

i have the advantage of having quite a bit of technology in most of my classes. it makes a HUGE difference when, for example, you’re talking about analyzing the lyrics of a song and you can pull up the lyrics and juxtapose that with the artist’s video of that very song…
i’ve found it immeasurably useful for explaining analysis. and it helps the student work through the block that exists between “knowing” and “articulating.” they know what the metaphors are alluding to, what they mean. they know it intuitively through experience/immersion. somehow the visual helps them put that “knowing” to words sometimes.
…if that makes any sense.
